This course discusses risk factors associated with ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries spanning from youth baseball to the professional level. Current concepts of both conservative and surgical management of UCL injuries, as well as injury prevention methods for adolescent/high school baseball pitchers, will also be discussed.

Part 2 of this two-part course covers the peripheral nervous system (PNS), common disorders, and treatment. Part II also includes less common neuropathies, Bell’s Palsy, upper and lower extremity compartment compression disorders, and neuromuscular junction disorders (NMJ).

Part I of a two-part course covers the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and common disorders and treatment. Part I includes a review of the anatomy, symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, levels & categories of peripheral nerve involvement, and presentation and management of common peripheral nerve lesions (PNL), including Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) & Hereditary Motor Sensory Neuropathies (CMT Disease).

Opioid abuse is one of the leading causes of death and non-accidental trauma among adults in the United States. The economic burden, including healthcare costs, addiction treatment, lost productivity, and criminal involvement of prescription opioid misuse, in the United States continues to rise. Healthcare providers need to be cognizant of the various community stakeholders to recognize opioid abuse and recognize potential abuse. Healthcare professionals can promote safe opioid use and prevent abuse by assisting and helping patients manage associated pain related to their injuries, which is critical to the well-being of student-athletes. The instructor will provide an overarching review of the literature as it pertains to prescription opioid use to allow the participant to recognize the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion.
