This course will describe the different mechanisms of action for electrical stimulation to restore function in patients with neurological dysfunction. Using case studies and best evidence, participants will learn how to design and execute interventions with electrical stimulation useful in neurorehabiliation.

In order to make meaningful contributions to general education Response to Intervention (RtI) activities, school-based occupational therapy and physical therapy practitioners must understand the RtI model and their role as part of the collaborative early intervening team. The position of the pelvis very much determines the position of the trunk and lower extremities and so achieving and maintaining the optimal position is critical. This course will present common pelvic asymmetries with suggested strategies to address each challenge. Providing as neutral a pelvic position as possible improves overall posture, stability and function.

This session will review techniques for clear and effective communication, verbal and written communication with those from other cultures, writing and selecting easy-to-read health materials, and assessment tools to use to ensure that clients understand the therapy services provided and have the skills needed to access, understand, and use health information.

This course will discuss various strategies to optimize head position. First, we will explore strategies beyond the head support, including specific positioning interventions and addressing visual issues. Second, we will explore posterior head supports in depth, matching specific features to client needs. Third, we will explore other options which may be required if posterior support alone is inadequate, including anterior head support.

A wide variety of orthotic designs are utilized by the rehab therapist to treat the painful osteoarthritic (OA) carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb. The purpose of this webinar is to provide an update of evidenced based orthotic interventions for the OA CMC joint to: reduce pain, increase pinch strength, increase joint stability and increase function.

Occupational performance for stroke patients is limited by hemiplegia of the shoulder complex and upper limb. Discussion will include anatomy of the shoulder and scapula, biomechanics, evaluation of the hemiplegic shoulder complex and trunk, and current evidence for treatment techniques and interventions such as NMES, taping, pain management, and functional use.

This course defines cultural and linguistic competency and related terms and presents factors that may affect the ability to provide culturally and linguistically competent care. This session addresses the need for self-awareness in culturally and linguistically competent medical care, the differences between disease and illness, and factors that may influence a patient's experience of illness as well as the health beliefs and practices of some cultures. The session offers an approach to eliciting a patient’s cultural health beliefs that can help inform therapists to deliver culturally appropriate treatments. This course is directly related to the practice of physical therapy and is therefore appropriate for the PT/PTA.
