Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a complex diagnosis and this course discusses the implications ALS for physical therapy, especially in the hospital setting. The intent is to give physical therapists a better understanding of what they can do to decrease the fear and anxiety for both the patient and therapist. Attendees will learn how-to program high-intensity strength training workouts. Course examines the benefits of high-intensity training, common methods and how-to use them while maintaining a focus on the prevention of overtraining. Power wheelchair evaluation determines appropriateness for power wheelchair use and then determines the optimal power wheelchair base, power seating, driving method and other needed components. Optimizing power wheelchair driving is critical to improve outcomes and includes choosing the best drive wheel configuration, utilizing tracking technologies, and programming.

The participant will learn a model to promote collaborative decision-making in all phases of assistive technology (AT) service design and delivery from consideration through implementation and evaluation of effectiveness. Utilizing the tools presented, participants will learn to evaluate clients with diverse abilities, needs, and experiences in the various environments they typically encounter and develop an AT plan of care for participation and achievement. This course provides an overview of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) as it relates to children and youth. Use of concepts within the ICF to enhance the provision of school-based physical therapy services will be presented and discussed. Goal Attainment Scaling is an evidence­ based outcome measure that can be used in the clinic and school-based settings to quantify and assess goals reached by clients. This session will explain the Goal Attainment Scaling, it's history and usage in a school-based setting.
