Learning Outcomes
- After this course, participants will be able to identify appropriate fall and balance assessment tools used by homecare physical therapists, regardless of the patient/client's referral diagnosis.
- After this course, participants will be able to analyze how a physical therapist's demographics influence clinical decision-making in selecting and performing fall assessments and utilizing balance tools.
- After this course, participants will be able to evaluate how documented contemporary clinical expertise, such as specialty certifications, continuing education, conferences, and years of experience as a physical therapist, plays a role in the selection and performance of fall and balance assessment tools.
- After this course, participants will be able to evaluate if physical therapists are utilizing best practice including clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries (STEADI) guidelines, evidenced based strategies, or recognized guidelines for performing fall risk assessments.
- By the end of this course, participants will be able to assess how patient demographics, psychosocial factors, and medical history—including age, fall history, and medications—inform a physical therapist’s decision to conduct fall and balance screenings and integrate patient-directed interventions.
- After this course, participants will be able to assess the appropriateness of patient management/intervention following the identification of an individual with fall risk.

Christopher Voltmer
PT, DPT, PhD, NCS
Christopher Voltmer, PT, DPT, PhD, NCS received his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from New York Institute of Technology in 2008. He was awarded the Academic Achievement Award and the NYPTA Participation Award upon graduation. Dr. Voltmer has worked in a variety of clinical settings while specializing in Neurological rehabilitation. He has been board-certified as a Neurological Clinical Specialist by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties since 2013. He successfully defended his dissertation in March of 2023 and received his PhD degree from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Voltmer has been a full time Assistant Professor at Touro College since 2014 and teaches the Neurologic curriculum.
