I felt this course was over focused on the emotional component of chronic pain....and perpetuated the 'Hysteria coponent'. In my experience, underlying mechanical or myofascial issues are much more the foundation of pain and resolution of it.

Highlighting the presence of adjacent areas or nearly the whole body becoming painful to touch or palpation per pt interpretation with centralized sensitization. Also the reduction in gray matter mass noted in people experiencing chronic pain. The brain changes being reversible is very exciting. Thank you to the presenter Jennifer Cummings as well as PT.com for the leg work putting this presentation online!

It's important to include the psychology of chronic pain and ways to bring it into the treatment plan of physical therapy. Also, all the treatments that can be offered in the physical therapy practice, for persistent pain, chronic pain, centralized sensitization, without reliance on pharmaceuticals only. It was a complete course on pain, in that it addressed the biology of pain, the psychological effects of pain, the effective treatments of pain including guided imagery and positive thinking.

presentation bounced around somewhat, great infocaution using heat in chronic situations due to underlying inflammation is exacerbated by heat. in my decades of PT experience, i must edu patients away from overuse of heat in vast majority of casesnotice you use 'somatic' for 'psychosomatic', they mean quite different things, (and yes, i often must edu patients and clinicians that psychosomatic is real)your slide 74, bullets 1 & 2 seem contradictory, suggest better clarification

I appreciated the in-depth discussion on how emotions and catastrophizing can make it take longer for people to break their pain cycle. It takes compassion and a stick-to-it-ness on the therapist's side as well so as not to "brush the patient" as being noncompliant

I didn't have a lot of time in school spent on the interpretation of pain and where it comes from. We were more focused on the "find it fix it" model that she described. I believe after completing this and doing some of the interventions that she laid out will help me better understand future pt pain. I like the aspects of how the mind alters the pain and how it is perceived. I have never thought to complete journaling or the thankfulness jar. I will continue to use this in the future.
