This course breaks down the science behind why spasticity develops after spinal cord injury, how to measure it accurately, and what the evidence says about treating it. Along the way we will challenge common clinical assumptions and build a practical framework for deciding when to treat, when to hold back, and how to work effectively with the rest of the interdisciplinary team for better patient outcomes. Whether you are new to SCI rehabilitation or looking to sharpen your clinical reasoning, participants will leave with a practical outcome measure battery, an evidence-based intervention framework, and a working knowledge of pharmacological and interventional options directly relevant to their practice.

- After this course, participants will be able to explain the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying spasticity following spinal cord injury and identify the mechanism of action, side effects, and physical therapy implications of common oral antispasticity medications, botulinum toxin, and intrathecal baclofen
- After this course, participants will be able to interpret the Modified Ashworth Scale, Modified Tardieu Scale, Penn Spasm Frequency Scale, Pendulum Test and Spinal Cord Assessment Tool for Spastic Reflexes in the SCI population
- After this course, participants will be able to select evidence-based physical therapy interventions for spasticity management

PT, DPT, NCS, CSRS
Dr. Lauren Young, PT, DPT, NCS, is a board-certified neurologic clinical specialist and founder of NeuroElite Physical Therapy, a neuro specialty practice providing clinical care in Lafayette, Louisiana. Dr. Young teaches continuing education courses on various neurologic topics, including stroke, spinal cord injury, and neuroplasticity/motor learning. She has extensive experience treating individuals with spinal cord injury, stroke, and other complex neurologic conditions. Dr. Young has served as core faculty in a hybrid, accelerated Doctor of Physical Therapy program, where she taught clinical neuroscience and human anatomy. She has presented at national and state conferences, including APTA’s Combined Sections Meeting. Dr. Young serves as the Lafayette district chair for the Louisiana APTA, is a member of the Clinician Task Force, and remains actively involved in community-based neurorehabilitation efforts. She is a long-standing member of the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy and the American Physical Therapy Association.
