PhD
Dr. Krista Best is a research scientist at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Rehabilitation and Social Integration at Université Laval. Funded by the Craig H Neilsen Foundation and the Fonds de Recherche du Quebec – Santé, she developed and evaluated an adapted physical activity program for individuals with spinal cord injury who use manual wheelchairs during her postdoctoral training at Université Laval. Dr. Best is recognized for her research on community-based, peer-led models. Her work in peer-led approaches to adapted physical activity began during her MSc at Dalhousie University when she developed a non-profit organization to establish a community-based physical activity program for children with disabilities in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She continued to evaluate peer-led approaches during her PhD at the University of British Columbia, for which she was awarded a Canada Vanier Scholarship. A large part of Dr. Best’s research focusses on wheelchair mobility, as independent mobility largely influences participation in phyiscal activity. Dr. Best has been a member of the Wheelchair Research Team at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Canada) for 17 years, and has 23 peer-reviewed publications related to mobility and physical activity participation for individuals with disabilities.
