Dr. Arena is a Professor and the Director of the Physical Therapy Program at Oakland University in Rochester, MI, and a licensed physical therapist practicing in the home health practice setting for Henry Ford Home Healthcare in Detroit, MI. She received her physical therapy degree from Grand Valley State University, a Masters in Exercise Science from Oakland University, and a Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy with a certificate in teaching and learning from Oakland University. Her teaching and clinical practice areas include health promotion and wellness, cardiopulmonary, therapeutic exercise, and home care. Her research focus aims to advance practice models of 1) cardiovascular examination specific to blood pressure methodology and its significance in physical therapy practice, 2) cardiovascular and pulmonary interventions in the practice of physical therapy on the health and wellness of both community-dwelling and home-bound individuals, and 3) cardiopulmonary and health promotion and wellness practices specifically related to lifestyle and fitness levels that impact primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. She is the co-founder and co-principal of HOP-UP-PT, L.L.C. and the HOP-UP Foundation research initiatives aimed at examining strategies to empower older adults to stay safe and active in their home and community using physical therapist-led prevention-focused approaches. Her scholarly efforts in this area have received more than ½ million dollars in grant funding, resulting in multiple peer-reviewed publications and state and national presentations.
