This course will link the therapeutic benefits with the unique properties of water allowing the participant to recognize patients who would most benefit from aquatic therapeutic interventions. This course is intended for the therapist new to aquatic therapy or therapists who refer to aquatic therapy programs and want an improved understanding of the therapeutic value of adding aquatic therapy into a patient’s rehabilitation program. This course is directly related to the practice of physical therapy and is therefore appropriate for the PT/PTA.

Learning Outcomes
- Participants will be able to provide at least three medical justification statements for the use of aquatic therapy relating specific therapeutic benefits of buoyancy, drag forces and hydrostatic pressure in a patient's plan of care.
- Participants will be able to identify at least five precautions and contraindications to aquatic therapy.
- Participants will be able to recognize at least three primary differences of human movement and muscle activation in the water compared to land.
- Participants will be able to identify at least three progressive rehabilitation exercises based on the properties of buoyancy and drag force.
- Participants will be able to list the use, benefits, and precautions to the three main types of aquatic therapy equipment (buoyancy, drag, and floatation).

Beth is the owner of North County Water and Sports Therapy Center in San Diego CA, specializing in aquatic and orthopedic physical therapy since 1997. Beth is an Orthopedic Certified Specialist, a certified STOTT Pilates instructor, and an Aquatic Therapy Rehabilitation Institute Certified therapist. In 2010, Beth was honored with Aquatic Therapy Rehabilitation Institute's Tsunami Spirit award for her contribution to aquatic therapy education. In 2012, she was named Aquatic Therapy Professional of the year. In 2015, the Aquatic Section of the APTA presented Beth with the Judy Cirullo award in recognition of her promotion of aquatic therapy. Additional aquatic therapy certifications include Master Instructor for the Burdenko Method and Trainer for AquaStretch™, a myofascial release technique performed in the water. Along with continuing to actively treat patients, Beth travels the country and world providing education courses with the focus on aquatic therapy.
