One experience links all humans regardless of the variety of factors that may differentiate us, death. Learn about open-ended communication techniques, including specific questions, to help open dialog with patients and their families, and gain a clear understanding of what physical therapy can offer those at the end of their life. (Trigger warning: discussions of death, dying, sickness, and old age will occur during this session). This course is directly related to the practice of physical therapy and is therefore appropriate for the PT and PTA.

Sharon L. Gorman, PT, DPTSc, GCS
Sharon Gorman, PT, DPTSc, GCS, FNAP is Professor of Physical Therapy at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA. She teaches Doctor of Physical Therapy students in the areas of acute care, neurologic rehabilitation, and management of complex patients. Dr. Gorman received her Doctor of Science degree in Physical Therapy at the University of California/San Francisco State University, a Master of Science in Health Science at San Francisco State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Mt. St. Mary’s University, Los Angeles. Dr. Gorman is board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist and also holds advanced certification and training in assessment and treatment of vestibular disorders and in neurodevelopmental treatment approaches for adults with hemiplegia. She is a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow of the National Academies of Practice, whose mission is “advancing interprofessional healthcare by fostering collaboration and advocating policies in the best interest of individuals and communities.” Dr. Gorman serves as Chief Financial Officer of Hands for Global Health, a non-governmental charitable organization committed to empowering health professions students to take leadership roles in global health and also serves as the President of the Academy of Acute Care Physical Therapy.
