Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a complex diagnosis and this course discusses the implications ALS for physical therapy, especially in the hospital setting. The intent is to give physical therapists a better understanding of what they can do to decrease the fear and anxiety for both the patient and therapist. This course is directly related to the practice of physical therapy and is therefore appropriate for the PT/PTA.

- Participants will be able to identify at least two arguments in support of the role of physical therapy for patients with ALS.
- Participants will be able to correctly list at least four therapeutic activities of appropriate level for a patient with ALS.
- Participants will be able to identify at least three strategies to address the physchological needs to decerase anxiety in a patient with ALS.
- Participants will be able to state at least four members of the multidisciplinary team that are helpful in providing comprehensive care in and out of the hospital for the patient with ALS.

Jennifer Liu, PT, DPT, NCS
Jennifer Liu is a practicing Physical Therapist and a Board Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Exercise Biology and a minor in Psychology from the University of California, Davis, and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Samuel Merritt University. Her clinical experience includes work in acute care (primarily cardiac, neurologic, and ICU settings) as well as outpatient (including neurologic, vestibular, orthopedic, and pediatric caseloads). She is also a former adjunct instructor for Samuel Merritt University. Currently, she works at Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento working with patients with neurodegenerative and neuromuscular conditions, and is the primary Physical Therapist in the Multidisciplinary ALS clinic.
