Aquatic Therapy for Adolescents with Joint Pain

Lori Sherlock, MS, ATRIC, AEA Fitness Specialist, CSCS

November 8, 2012

Question

Are you aware of any research done regarding adolescents with joint pain or syndromes such as Osgood Schlatters showing a benefit from the aquatic environment?

Answer

There are some studies that have been done with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis showing that these kids benefit greatly from aquatic intervention. The pool is the perfect place for kids across the board to exercise. Oftentimes, kids experience Osgood Schlatters because of a crazy growth spurt.  These kids want to get more into their sport because their height is now allowing them to do more, yet pain is starting to cause them to do less. In these cases, the aquatic environment would be a great place for them to recondition their bodies and adjust to their new crazy growth. It also reconditions their joints to become stronger and the joint capsules to be stronger and more integrated so that they are ready to go back out into their land training.
