Because there is no recipe, managing chronic/persistent pain in home health can be challenging and daunting. This course will dive into the realms of neuroscience and best practice for helping clinicians aid their patient’s to better self-manage their pain based on current available research. This course is directly related to the practice of physical therapy and is therefore appropriate for the PT/PTA.

- Participants will be able to identify least three aspects of pain science that can be used to develop patient specific goals for improving function.
- Participants will be able to define at least two biopsychosocial aspects of pain for use in developing an integrated interdisciplinary approach and update agency pain policies to treating chronic/persistent pain.
- Participants will be able to develop at least two strategies to accurately answer the Medicare OASIS questions on pain.
- Participants will be able to develop at least two strategies to improve functional outcomes in anticipation of Patient Driven Groupings Model (PDGM) in 2020.
- Participants will be able to develop at least three language and metaphor strategies to help patients improve their knowledge and understanding of his or her pain experience.

Jamie Lowy, PT, MSPT
Jamie Lowy received his Masters of Science in Physical Therapy in 1998 from the University of the Pacific. He has worked in the home health setting since 2000 as both a field clinician and manager. In 2016 he started training in chronic/persistent pain management with the goal of expanding the role of PTs in home health to address issues of pain incorporating best practice strategies as evidenced in the latest pain science research. This culminated in co-authoring the “Pain Management in Home Health Practice ” resource with Keith Waldron, Kenny Venere, and Kenneth Miller for the APTA home health section. Jamie has recently taken on a new role in the Primary Care setting in addressing broader population health needs in the realm of persistent pain management that utilizes an integrated approach between physiotherapy, PCPs, and behavioral health clinicians. Jamie presents to local health care practitioners on pain management and has presented at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting; He will be presenting on pain management in the low income and homeless populations at the 2020 San Diego Pain Summit.
