This course incorporates theory AND practice guidelines to help establish “what and why” things need to be done as a therapist, which ultimately leads to better understanding of the methods employed and the importance of carryover between disciplines. Understanding why something should be done encourages its actual performance, as well as reinforcement to parents during education as the baby transitions home..

Good info on synactive theory, sensory development of preterm infants, and critical periods of dev. Good info on pain modulation in preterm and term infants, and non-pharmacological strategies for management that thx may be involved in in the NICU, stress signs. Good info on strategies for facilitating posture and neurodevelopment, including appropriate postures for micro-preemies, preemies, older infants in the unit, and how this changes towards and after discharge. Great re PT role in feeding

Good information about NICU experience as it relates to the importance of overall motor development after the babies leave the NICU. Very helpful to know the sensory system development to help us understand what our patients may have missed out on and help with sensory regulation.

Dr Hyams spoke quickly and used a number of undefined acronyms. Sub-categories in her comments could have been better reflected on the slides. The Feeding Readiness Assessment could have also been included as a PDF download, since it was difficult to read from the small slide. I was glad to have the full transcript! That said, I did appreciate learning about using a developmental approach when designing NICU interventions, and also about the importance of cross-disciplinary cooperation in the NICU.

I loved the idea of doing a patient board just for therapy interventions. We have a nursing board, but a therapy board with education for developmental care is excellent.
