Course Abstract

This course presents the basic principles of physical therapy assessment and treatment of patients with cardiovascular pathology. The presentation will utilize the clinical decision making model to serve as a framework for developing an effective plan of care for patients who may have primary or secondary cardiovascular problems. Assessment and treatment parameters will apply across the lifespan and within various PT settings. This is part 1 of a 2-part series. Part 1 will be on assessment and Part 2 will be on techniques and treatment.

  • Apply the clinical decision making model to identify patients with limited activity tolerance who may benefit from physical therapy.
  • Discriminate between normal & abnormal responses to assessment and/or treatment in making informed decisions about continuance of a given activity eg ‘stay or go'.
  • Identify and apply appropriate assessment and outcome measures to determine an effective plan of care for a patient with cardiovascular pathology.

Bini Litwin, PT, DPT, PhD, MBA

Dr. Litwin PT DPT PhD MBA has been a physical therapist for over 35 years, having worked in various clinical settings throughout her professional career. She has been on faculty at Nova Southeastern University in Ft Lauderdale, Fl for the past 14 years, where she is Associate Professor in the Physical Therapy Department.  Her teaching responsibilities include Cardiovascular and Pulmonary PT, Applied Clinical Decision Making and Critical Inquiry. She has numerous peer reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences.
