By presenting latest research in respect to spine stabilization and aquatic therapy for individuals with lumbar spine dysfunction, osteoarthritis and/ or total joint replacement this course aims to assist the clinician in utilizing the unique properties of water to improve their patient’s outcomes. Clinical applications discussed include; aquatic exercise progressions to reduce pain and improve function and aquatic interventions and exercise progressions to improve range of motion, gait and balance.
Editor's Note: Regarding Pennsylvania credits, this course is approved by the PA State Board of Physical Therapy for 4 hours of General CE Credit, from 6/03/14-12/31/14.

Learning Outcomes
- The participant will be able to independently distinguish between global and local muscles and their role in spine stabilization exercise.
- The participant will be able to describe the key components to exercise for each of the 3 phases of spine stabilization.
- The participant will be able to independently list at least three exercises to target specific and combined planes of movement.
- The participant will be able describe to therapeutic benefits to deep and shallow aquatic exercise in the treatment of lower back dysfunction.
- The participant will be able to discuss the latest aquatic therapy research in treating patients with spinal dysfunction.
- The participant will be able to describe at least two therapeutic benefits of buoyancy, drag forces and hydrostatic pressure.
- The participant will be able to discuss latest research regarding aquatic therapy for individuals with OA and/or TKA and THA.
- The participant will be able to compare muscle activation during walking in the water and on land.
- The participant will be able to independently implement at least three aquatic exercises to increase mobility, function and gait into a treatment plan.
