Approximately 11,000 new spinal cord injuries occur each year in the United States. This presentation is not necessarily about spinal cord injury, but many times spine trauma leads to spinal cord injury. Also mishandling or inappropriate conservative management can also lead to spinal cord injury. As we talk about conservative management of spine trauma, we should be cognizant of different aspects of the problem and then ensure as we provide care that the patient is handled properly and appropriate care is provided.
Approximately 250,000 people in the United States have spinal cord injury. Approximately half of the injuries occur in the thoracic, lumbar, and sacral areas. The other half occurs in the cervical spine, which is the most unstable area of our spinal column. The average age at injury is 32 years, and about 55% of those injured are ages between 16 and 30 years. It is a fairly common injury or problem type among young adults. Approximately 80% of the patients in the United States national database are male, and vehicular accidents account for approximately one-third of the reported cases, and approximately 25% of the cases are due to violence. How many of you see patients with spine trauma and spinal cord injuries? Do you work in hospitals or clinics where they treat a lot of spine trauma? After hearing these facts and knowing the severity of these problems, we understand that spine trauma management is a big part of the patient care that we provide. ...
