The Nine Areas of Functional Decline
A Study by the American Geriatrics Society
-- December 12, 2006 - The American Geriatrics Society came out with the attached study. This study identified 9 areas of medicine that could be assessed that show a risk of functional decline. These areas are:

„« Benzodiazepine use

„« Depression
„« Low exercise level

„« Low social functioning

„« Body mass index

„« Poor visual acuity

„« Low bone mineral density

„« Slow gait

„« Weak grip

Physical Therapy can directly provide assistance in getting these individuals on a short rehabilitative program that will lead to a home exercise program to directly work on 3 of those areas:

„« Low exercise level

„« Gait

„« Weak grip

This is done through conducting a specific dynamometry muscle test, comparing them to norms by age, and developing a very specific exercise program for deficient areas. Working on these 3 areas would be a benefit because it would impact 3 more areas:
„« Low bone density

„« Body mass index

„« Depression

In addition, if the person comes into the office more often, it may affect their social functioning level as well.

Physical Therapists are capable of seeing these individuals in their home or having them come into their office for a visit.

Medicare has extended theunlimited benefit for physical therapy through 2002. If you, or someone you know, has any of the above listed problems, consider a consultation with a Physical Therapist
